Organic Garden
Walking up to the hotel from the jetty the first sight to greet you will be our award-winning organic kitchen garden. It’s here we produce the vegetables, salad leaves, herbs, seasonal soft fruits, and flowers that make their way to the tables of the hotel.
Growing food on the edge of the Atlantic is challenging as the season is short and the winds strong, but we are helped by our light sandy soil and a mild maritime climate.
We focus on varieties that are either local or well suited to our location which we cultivate using a No-Dig approach to benefit soil microbial life and biodiversity alongside the traditional island practice of covering our beds in seaweed for the winter as a fertiliser.
Certified by the Soil Association since 2008, our award-winning organic garden produces seasonal flowers, fruit, vegetables, salad leaves, and honey for the St Columba Hotel kitchen and for sale in our shop The Larder. It also produces the various botanicals used in our exclusive St Columba spirit range.
We think the view from the garden is also an advantage, there is no evidence it helps the produce but it certainly helps the gardeners!
The garden is open to the public to enjoy, so feel free to come in and explore.
